Abstract

Treatment of oesophageal varices by insertion of Murphy's button arrests haemorrhage but in 2/3 of the cases of secondary stenosis occurs between the 4th and 8th week. The use of Blakemore's probe contributes to this. It is a very severe stenosis in 15 p. 100 of the cases and may require insertion of a wire loop. Dilatation should be started as soon as the first symptoms appear.
