With a brief description of the status of old people in Indonesian society and the organization of institutional care the author discusses the current attitudes towards the elderly. In an empirical study a group of working and a group of non-working elderly aged 55 and older were questioned about their wishes with regard to activity and their social attitude. The results indicate a significant preference for activity and social relations in both groups. This is interpreted as a validation of the activity theory. Further consequences for practical work in the institutions for the aged are drawn.
