Abstract
With the support of the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Program in the Chemistry Division and the NSF EPSCoR Program, Professor Stevenson, of the Chemistry Department at the University of Southern Mississippi, will explore the chemistry of metallic nitride caged fullerenes (MNFs). Areas to be investigated include the plasma arc synthesis of new nanoclusters, their purification, functionalization of their electronically charged cage surfaces, and molecular modeling to determine reactivity. Extensive collaborations will explore these MNF nanomaterial derivatives for applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and pharmaceuticals. With the support of the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Program in the Chemistry Division and the NSF EPSCoR Program, Professor Stevenson will pursue an educational strategy designed to improve traditionally low student test scores. This strategy will target high school and lower-level undergraduate women and underrepresented minorities. Stevenson will work synergistically with state and local institutions to provide a program that fosters discovery and learning through integration of research and education.
