Abstract

Examined the nature of career decision-making self-efficacy, as a construct, for the application of research to the practice of career counseling and career development. Also explored were the potential for reducing the 50-item Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale (CDMSE; K. M. Taylor and N. E. Betz, 1983) to a smaller set of items. Ss were 418 underprepared students (aged 18–48 yrs) who completed the CDMSE. The sample was randomly split into 2 equally representative groups to test for the robustness of the component structure of the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale. Results indicate evidence that CDMSE consists of at least 2 distinct components for Ss. Several variables load uniquely on 1 of the 2 factors, suggesting that the 2 factors are distinguishable and measure different aspects of CDMSE. The 1st component accounted for a large portion of item variance with the 2nd component accounting for an additional 5%. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
