Abstract

Describes the development and evaluation of a short form of the widely used Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale (CDMSE). The CDMSE measures an individual's degree of belief that he or she can successfully complete tasks necessary to making career decisions. The psychometric characteristics of the CDMSE were investigated, and its relationship to 2 frequently used criterion variables reflecting career indecision, the Career Decision Scale (CDS) and My Vocational Situation, were examined in a sample of 184 college students. Results show that this short form of the CDMSE possesses psychometric characteristics comparable to or better than the long form with only half the length. Although further research is needed, the short form of the CDMSE appears very promising for both research and counseling purposes. For counseling, a short CDMSE could be used in screening clients for treatment programs, and because of its brevity, could be included as an intake procedure.
