Abstract

This chapter focuses on career advice for early career psychiatrists who belong to underrepresented groups, such as women, ethnic minorities, and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) psychiatrists who face additional challenges as academic faculty. The current status of underrepresented groups will be discussed, as well as strategies for success and pitfalls to avoid. The advice given in this chapter is intended for residents, specifically second-year residents, but it is applicable at any stage in one's career. Clearly, the earlier you get started, the faster and farther you can advance in your academic career. Special issues for underrepresented faculty include the importance of mentorship and networking, prioritization, and seeking out programs specific for that particular group.
