Gender and achievement choices.

Jacquelynne S Eccles

UIID-AD: 1656

Abstract

Eccles applies basic research on gender roles to better understand the real-world problem of the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). By affecting the values associated with particular career fields (e.g., helping people) and' girls' and women's expected efficacy in particular fields and occupations, gender roles affect the subjects girls study in school, the majors they undertake in college, and the careers they pursue as adult women, over and above their actual academic abilities. As Eccles notes, interventions that change girls' beliefs about the utility and applicability of STEM careers hold promise for increasing the number of women in STEM fields.
